Hi Everyone! I have a super awesome tutorial to share with you today! It's a recipe for clear edible gelatin plastic! It's one of the neatest cake decorating materials I've ever used! It looks and feels just like real plastic! How cool is that?! It's totally edible, but definitely not something you'd want to eat... unless you like eating tasteless crunchy plastic things. Ha ha! Anyway, hope you enjoy!! Learn How To CAKE That here |

I have made this before. You can use 7up or Sprite instead of water gives it a nice flavor.

Hi Lisa! That's awesome! I would have never thought to use clear soda in place of the water! Very clever!! Thanks for sharing!! :)

Am new to using gelatin. Need some snowflakes. Could you use a craft punch on the plastic?

Hello Robin! Although the gelatin plastic is flexible, it may become brittle under the pressure of a craft punch. I have, however, had success using a craft punch to make snowflakes using Icing sheets. If you check out my cupcake wreath tutorial, you will see where I used this technique on the icing sheet. The icing sheet snowflakes will be very delicate, so make plenty extra! If you are hoping for clear snowflakes, I recommend checking Global Sugar Art to see if they have a snowflake mold for gelatin. Or if you have experience using isomalt, maybe use a high-temp snowflake sugar mold. :)

Thanks for the information. I had thought of the icing sheets as well. They would definately be a lot easier.

Hello! Yes, a silicone mat can be used, but the results will not be the same as if you used a sheet of plastic. The silicone mat will cause the liquid to gather into a thick puddle instead of a thin coating. And this thick puddle will dry very wavy and warped and with a yellow color instead of clear. Also, it will pick up any texture on your mat if your mat is textured like mine is :). I definitely recommend using the plastic over the silicone if at all possible!
